Yate: South Gloucestershire's Expanded Town North of Bristol
Yate is a town in South Gloucestershire, about twelve miles north-east of Bristol. The population is around 34,000. Once a small village, Yate expanded rapidly from the 1960s as a planned residential area to absorb overspill from Bristol. The town centre, rebuilt around the Yate Shopping Centre in the 1960s and 1970s, has a modern, functional character. The nearby Celestine mines, which operated until 1994, extracted strontium sulphate; the Yate area was the largest source of celestine in the world.
Yate railway station reopened in 1989 after closure during the Beeching era, with services to Bristol Temple Meads (around 30 minutes) and Gloucester. The Frome Valley Walkway, a long-distance path, passes through the area. Yate Rocks, a small outcrop of Carboniferous limestone, is a local geological feature.
