South Gloucestershire wraps around Bristol's northern and eastern edges, a patchwork of new towns, old villages, science parks, and motorway corridors. Filton is the headline name: the airfield here was where Concorde was assembled and first flew its British prototype in 1969. Bradley Stoke, south of the M4/M5 junction, is one of England's largest new housing developments, built from scratch in the 1980s and 1990s on former farmland. It has been called "Sadly Broke" in the tabloids — a reference to negative equity during the early 1990s property crash — but the area has matured into a settled suburban community with its own shops, schools, and leisure centre. Yate and Chipping Sodbury, further east, are older market towns that retain more historical character.
The M4 and M5 junction at Almondsbury gives South Gloucestershire a strategic position in the national road network. Distribution centres, business parks (including the Aztec West and Bristol & Bath Science Park developments), and the Cribbs Causeway retail complex all exploit this connectivity.
