Great Malvern: Spring Water, the Hills, and Elgar's Worcestershire
Great Malvern clings to the eastern slopes of the Malvern Hills, a dramatic ridge of pre-Cambrian rock rising to 425 metres at the Worcestershire Beacon. The town grew as a spa from the 1750s, when Dr John Wall published an analysis of the spring water. The water, filtered through ancient rock, was bottled commercially from 1851 and supplied to the Royal household. Schweppes still bottles Malvern water locally. The Malvern Priory, founded in 1085, retains exceptional medieval stained glass. The population of Great Malvern itself is around 30,000.
Edward Elgar lived in and around Malvern for much of his life. The Enigma Variations, first performed in 1899, were composed at Craeg Lea on Wells Road. The Malvern Theatres complex hosts the annual Elgar Festival and a year-round programme. Morgan Motor Company, building hand-crafted sports cars since 1909, operates its factory on Pickersleigh Road.
