Bromsgrove was a nail-making town. Domestic nail production employed thousands of workers in the town and surrounding villages through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, often in appalling conditions. The nail trade declined with mechanisation. The Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, just south of the town, preserves over thirty rescued structures including a medieval merchant's house and a working windmill. The Lickey Hills Country Park, on the northern edge, is a popular walking area with views across Birmingham and the Severn valley. The population is around 32,000, with the wider Bromsgrove district at 100,000.
Bromsgrove station provides West Midlands Railway services to Birmingham New Street. The M5 junction 4 and M42 junction 1 are both accessible. Birmingham is thirteen miles north. For adult companionship, Bromsgrove is covered by West Mercia Police and governed by England and Wales criminal law.
