Haywards Heath is a town in the Mid Sussex district of West Sussex, about fourteen miles north of Brighton and thirty-seven miles south of London. The population is around 33,000. Unlike many Sussex towns with medieval origins, Haywards Heath was largely a creation of the railway. The London to Brighton line opened through here in 1841, and the town grew around the station. The name probably derives from a heath associated with a family called Hayward, recorded locally from the sixteenth century.
Haywards Heath railway station is a junction where the line to Lewes branches off the Brighton main line. Services to London Bridge and London Victoria take about 45 minutes. The town centre was redeveloped in the 2000s with the Orchards Shopping Centre. Borde Hill Garden, a Grade II* listed heritage garden with collections of rare trees and shrubs, lies about a mile to the north. Cuckfield, a village with a fine church and medieval fair, is adjacent to the west. The South Downs National Park boundary is about three miles south. English law governs adult companionship here.
