Great Sankey is a suburb on the western side of Warrington, in the Warrington unitary authority in Cheshire. The population of the Great Sankey and Chapelford area is around 30,000. It was a small village until Warrington was designated a new town in 1968, after which large housing estates were built across the western fringe, absorbing Great Sankey, Penketh, and later Chapelford Village into the Warrington conurbation. The Chapelford Urban Village development, built in the 2000s on the former RAF Burtonwood airbase, added several thousand homes. Sankey Valley Park, a linear park running along Sankey Brook, is one of Warrington's better green spaces and follows the route of the Sankey Canal, which has a claim to being Britain's first modern canal, predating the Bridgewater Canal.
Great Sankey is residential and suburban in character. The Chapelford Village has a local centre with a supermarket and small shops, and the Omega development to the north has brought major distribution and logistics employers including Royal Mail, Hermes, and Amazon. The M62 junction 7 is close, putting Liverpool 20 minutes west and Manchester 25 minutes east. Warrington Central and Bank Quay stations are a short drive or bus ride into town. For those interested in adult companionship in the Warrington area, Great Sankey's position on the M62 corridor makes it well connected to both Liverpool and Manchester, as well as Warrington town centre itself.
