Pontypool: Ironworks Heritage in the Eastern Valleys of South Wales
Pontypool lies at the head of the Lwyd Valley in Torfaen, one of the eastern valleys of South Wales. The town has a long industrial history; the Hanbury family established ironworks here in the sixteenth century, and Pontypool became known for its japanware, a lacquered tinplate that imitated Japanese lacquerwork. The technique was developed locally around 1700 and became a significant export. The population is approximately 28,000. Pontypool Park, a public park created from the grounds of the former Hanbury estate, covers around 64 acres and includes an artificial ski slope and the ground of Pontypool RFC.
Pontypool is about ten miles north of Newport, connected by the A4042 and the Pontypool and New Inn railway station, which provides services to Cardiff and Crewe. The town sits within the Torfaen county borough. The Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognising the early ironworking and coal-mining heritage of the area, lies a few miles to the north. Adult companionship in Wales is governed by the same criminal law as England.
