The town has a long industrial history; the Hanbury family established ironworks here in the sixteenth century, and Pontypool became known for its japanware, a lacquered tinplate that imitated Japanese lacquerwork. The technique was developed locally around 1700 and became a significant export. The population is approximately 28,000. Pontypool Park, a public park created from the grounds of the former Hanbury estate, covers around 64 acres and includes an artificial ski slope and the ground of Pontypool RFC.
