Walton-on-Thames: Elmbridge Town on the River Where Julius Caesar May Have Crossed
Walton-on-Thames lies in the Elmbridge borough of Surrey, about 15 miles southwest of central London. The population is around 22,000. A local tradition, supported by some archaeological evidence, holds that Julius Caesar forded the Thames here during his invasion of Britain in 54 BC, with sharpened stakes found in the riverbed. Whether or not Caesar actually crossed at this point is debated, but the claim persists. The town was largely rural until the railway arrived in 1838, after which it developed as a commuter settlement. The Heart shopping centre dominates the commercial area.
Walton Bridge, the current version opened in 2013, crosses the Thames to Shepperton. The river frontage at Cowey Sale is a green space along the bank. Walton-on-Thames station has trains to London Waterloo in about 30 minutes. The A3050 runs through town, and the A244 connects to the M25 at junction 10, a few miles to the south. Weybridge is the neighbouring town to the west, and Sunbury-on-Thames lies to the north across the river.
