Sunbury-on-Thames is a town in the Borough of Spelthorne in Surrey, about 15 miles southwest of central London on the north bank of the River Thames. The population is approximately 28,000. The town has roots going back to the Anglo-Saxon period; the name appears in the Domesday Book as "Suneberie." The riverside area around the church and the Walled Garden retains an older character, while much of the town is 20th-century suburban development. Sunbury was the site of the Middlesex Waterworks pumping station, parts of which date from the 1850s and are now a museum. BP had its international research centre at Sunbury for decades, and the site remains a significant local employer under the Castrol brand.
Sunbury station is on the Shepperton branch of the South Western Railway, with services to London Waterloo taking about 45 minutes. The M3 motorway runs to the south, providing access to London via the A316 and to the M25 at junction 12. Shepperton Studios, one of the UK's major film studios and the production base for numerous Hollywood and British films, is a couple of miles to the west. Kempton Park Racecourse lies immediately to the north. Walton-on-Thames and Hampton are nearby neighbours along the river. For those considering adult companionship in the Spelthorne area, Sunbury's rail link to Waterloo and M3 corridor access put both central London and the wider Surrey and Middlesex area within easy reach.
