Washington was designated a new town in 1964, absorbing several older villages including the original Washington Village where the ancestors of George Washington lived. Washington Old Hall, a medieval manor house, is maintained by the National Trust. The Nissan car plant, opened in 1986, is one of the most productive in Europe and the single largest private employer in the North East. The population is around 67,000. Washington is part of the City of Sunderland metropolitan district.
The A1(M) runs along the western edge, and the A19 passes to the east. Washington is divided into numbered districts, a new town planning convention. The Galleries shopping centre in the town centre serves the local population. Sunderland is four miles east.
