Lowestoft: England's Most Easterly Town, Fishing Port, and the North Sea Edge
Lowestoft is the most easterly town in England. Ness Point, marked by a metal disc on the promenade, is the furthest east you can stand on the British mainland. The fishing industry that built the town has contracted sharply. The Birds Eye factory, once a major employer, closed in 2012. The population is around 72,000. The town splits into two halves connected by the Bascule Bridge over Lake Lothing, the inner harbour that divides north from south. The north side has the older town, the seafront, and the tourist beaches. The south side carries the port, the industrial areas, and the Oulton Broad waterway connecting to the Broads.
Offshore energy has provided some economic replacement. The wind farms off the Suffolk and Norfolk coasts use Lowestoft as a service base, and Scottish Power Renewables operates from the port. The town is isolated by road (the A12 terminates here) and rail (the East Suffolk Line to Ipswich is slow). For adult companionship, Lowestoft falls under Suffolk Constabulary and is governed by England and Wales criminal law.
