Ipswich has evidence of continuous occupation from the seventh century. The Anglo-Saxon settlement traded pottery across the North Sea. Cardinal Wolsey was born here in 1473, attended the grammar school, and later tried to found a college in the town. It was never completed. The college gatehouse is all that remains.
