Tamworth: Ancient Mercian Capital at the Staffordshire Edge
Tamworth was the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia. The castle, originally a motte-and-bailey fortification raised by the daughter of Alfred the Great in 913, still overlooks the town from its position above the confluence of the rivers Tame and Anker. The town itself has a population of around 78,000 and sits at the point where Staffordshire meets Warwickshire, with Birmingham thirteen miles to the southwest. The Snowdome, an indoor real-snow ski slope, is the most recognisable modern landmark.
Tamworth's economy is a mix of retail, light industry, and distribution. The Ventura Retail Park and the Jolly Sailor Retail Park pull spending from a wide catchment. The town centre along George Street and Church Street is compact. Tamworth is well connected by road (the A5 and M42 are close) and sits on the Cross City Line into Birmingham.
