Long before Newcastle upon Tyne became the default association, Newcastle-under-Lyme was a significant market town. The borough charter dates from 1173, granted by Henry II. The "Lyme" refers to the ancient forest of Lyme that once covered much of north Staffordshire. The town has spent centuries in the shadow of its Tyneside namesake and, more recently, in the shadow of Stoke-on-Trent next door. It has handled both with reasonable grace.
