Southend-on-Sea: The World's Longest Pier and a New City
Southend-on-Sea was granted city status in 2022 as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee honours — a recognition partly driven by the campaigning legacy of Sir David Amess, the local MP murdered in 2021. For most of its history, Southend has been a seaside resort, built on the south end of Prittlewell parish and connected to London by rail from the 1850s onwards. The pier, at 1.34 miles, is the longest pleasure pier in the world. A small railway runs its length, saving visitors the walk out to the pier head, where the RNLI lifeboat station sits above the Thames estuary.
The seafront — Adventure Island funfair, the Kursaal (a now-repurposed Edwardian amusement hall), and the arches along Western Esplanade — gives Southend a seaside character that can feel either charming or faded depending on the weather and the season. Behind the front, the High Street runs uphill through a retail centre that has contracted but still functions. Leigh-on-Sea, at the western end of the borough, has a working cockle sheds industry along the waterfront and an old town with independent galleries, pubs, and restaurants that pull visitors from across Essex.
London commuters have reshaped Southend's demographics. The c2c rail service reaches Fenchurch Street in under an hour, and property prices, while lower than inner Essex, have risen substantially. The town's two main commercial clusters — the High Street and the Victoria Avenue area — serve a population that mixes long-term residents, London overspill, and a significant Eastern European community that grew after 2004. The University of Essex's Southend campus, at the Elmer Square development, has brought a student presence to the centre.
