South Shields: Mouth of the Tyne, Sandhaven, and the South Tyneside Coast
South Shields sits at the southern entrance to the River Tyne, facing North Shields across the water. The town has a population of approximately 75,000 and functions as the main centre of the Metropolitan Borough of South Tyneside. The seafront at Sandhaven and the beach running south toward Marsden are the main draws in summer. Marsden Rock, a sea stack colonised by seabirds, stands just offshore. The Arbeia Roman Fort, originally garrisoned to defend the mouth of the Tyne and guard the supply route for Hadrian's Wall, has been partially reconstructed and is free to visit.

The Shields Ferry crosses to North Shields in seven minutes. The Tyne and Wear Metro connects South Shields to Newcastle city centre in about 25 minutes.
