The Mendip Hills run for roughly 25 miles across north Somerset, a limestone ridge rising to 325 metres at Black Down. Beneath the surface, the hills are honeycombed with caves and gorges. Wookey Hole, inhabited since the Stone Age, remains both a show cave and a persistent source of legend. Cheddar Gorge, the largest gorge in England, cuts 137 metres deep through the limestone. The oldest complete skeleton found in Britain, Cheddar Man (around 9,000 years old), was discovered in a cave here in 1903.
