Solihull: JLR Country and the NEC Belt
Solihull exists in the overlap between Birmingham's metropolitan sprawl and the Warwickshire countryside. The town itself — centred on the High Street, St Alphege Church, and Mell Square — retains a prosperous market-town feel despite being administratively part of the West Midlands conurbation. Property prices are consistently among the highest in the region. Shirley, Knowle, Dorridge, and Bentley Heath extend the affluent suburban character southward and eastward.
The Jaguar Land Rover plant at Lode Lane is the borough's largest single employer and one of the biggest manufacturing sites in the UK. The factory has produced Land Rovers since 1948 — the original Series I rolled off this production line. The nearby National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham Airport, and Birmingham International station form a transport and events cluster that generates enormous economic activity. The NEC alone hosts over 500 events annually, and the Resorts World entertainment complex and HS2's future Interchange station are planned to amplify this further.
Solihull's character divides roughly into three zones: the urban north (Chelmsley Wood, Marston Green, Kingshurst), which is less affluent and more densely built; the prosperous centre and south; and the rural eastern fringe toward Meriden and Hampton-in-Arden. The borough council's reputation for careful planning and high service standards is a point of local pride, even if it sometimes reads as exclusionary from outside.
