Plymstock: Residential Suburb on the Eastern Side of Plymouth Sound
Plymstock sits on the eastern shore of Plymouth Sound, across the Plym estuary from Plymouth city centre. The population is around 30,000. Before Plymouth's expansion absorbed it, Plymstock was a separate village with its own identity, and traces of that survive in the old village area around St Mary and All Saints Church on Church Road. The Staddon Heights area on the southern edge overlooks Plymouth Sound and the breakwater, with former military fortifications along the coast. Turnchapel and Hooe, at the head of the Cattewater inlet, have a maritime character tied to boat building and fishing.
The Broadway shopping area handles everyday retail. Radford Park, an old estate with woodland walks, sits between Plymstock and Plympton. A regular bus service connects to Plymouth city centre in about 20 minutes, though there is no railway station. The A379 runs along the waterfront connecting to the Laira Bridge and Plymouth. The Plymstock bypass links to the A38 Devon Expressway. Plymouth's ferry port, with services to Santander and Roscoff, is across the water.
