Bicester sits in north Oxfordshire, about thirteen miles north-east of Oxford. The population is around 40,000 and growing rapidly due to major housing developments. Bicester Village, an outlet shopping centre opened in 1995, attracts around seven million visitors a year and is one of the top tourist destinations in the country by visitor numbers, drawing coach parties from London and direct Chiltern Railways services. The shopping centre and the town itself are quite different things.
The old market town centre has a compact square and a number of listed buildings, including the Church of St Edburg with a Norman chancel arch. The former RAF Bicester, a largely intact 1920s and 1930s bomber station, is a designated Conservation Area and one of the best-preserved pre-war airfields in the country. Bicester is part of the planned Bicester eco-town, with large-scale development including the Kingsmere and Graven Hill estates. Chiltern Railways runs services to London Marylebone (about an hour), and the East West Rail project will connect Bicester to Milton Keynes and Cambridge. Adult companionship follows English law.
