Mansfield: Mining Town Finding Its Next Chapter
This was coal country. The Nottinghamshire coalfield sustained Mansfield and its surrounding villages (Clipstone, Edwinstowe, Rainworth, Ravenshead) for most of the twentieth century. Mansfield Colliery closed in 1988. Thoresby, the last deep mine in the area, shut in 2015. The scars are visible: former pit sites turned into country parks, spoil heaps landscaped, miners' welfare clubs repurposed or demolished. The Four Seasons shopping centre and the Market Place form the commercial core. Both have struggled with the retail decline affecting similar-sized towns across the Midlands.
