Cramlington: Northumberland New Town Built on Former Colliery Land
Cramlington is a town in south-east Northumberland, about eight miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne. The population is around 40,000. Originally a small colliery village, Cramlington was designated for expansion as a new town in 1963, and large-scale housing and industrial development followed through the 1960s and 1970s. The Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH), opened in 2015, is a major emergency care facility serving the region. The old village, with its church and a few older houses, is distinct from the newer estates and the Manor Walks shopping centre.
The A1 and A189 (the Spine Road) provide the main road connections. Cramlington railway station is on the East Coast Main Line, though only local services stop here, with Newcastle Central about 15 minutes away. The Nelson Industrial Estate and the Cramlington section of the Northumberland Business Park are significant employment sites.
