Kettering made boots and shoes. The footwear industry dominated the town from the nineteenth century into the post-war decades, and the last factories closed within living memory. Weetabix has been manufactured at Burton Latimer, on the edge of Kettering, since 1932. The factory still produces every box sold in the UK from the same site. The population is around 56,000, with the wider North Northamptonshire area (which now includes Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, and East Northamptonshire under a single unitary authority) reaching approximately 350,000.
The A14 runs past the southern edge, connecting Kettering to the M1/M6 junction at one end and the A1 at the other. Kettering station provides East Midlands Railway services to London St Pancras in about an hour. For adult companionship, Kettering is covered by Northamptonshire Police and falls under England and Wales criminal law.
