Scunthorpe: Steel Town on the Humber, Still Standing
Scunthorpe exists because of ironstone. The deposits in the limestone ridge running through North Lincolnshire attracted ironworks from the 1860s onward, and the town grew around them. British Steel (now owned by Jingye Group) still operates the steelworks on the eastern edge of town, one of the few integrated steelworks left in the UK. The works dominate the skyline. When the furnaces are running at night, the glow is visible for miles. The population is around 82,000.
The town centre along the High Street and the Parishes shopping centre serve the local market. Scunthorpe is the main town of the North Lincolnshire unitary authority, an area of approximately 172,000 that stretches from the Humber bank to the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds. The M180 and M181 connect the town to the M1 corridor and the Humber ports at Immingham and Grimsby.
