Irvine is a town on the Ayrshire coast, designated as a new town in 1966 to accommodate population growth from Glasgow. The population is around 34,000. The town's history is considerably older than the new town designation suggests. The Royal Burgh dates to the twelfth century, and the harbour at the mouth of the River Irvine was once a significant trading port. Robert Burns lived in Irvine in 1781-82, learning the trade of flax dressing in a heckling shop on the Glasgow Vennel. The building survives as part of the Burns Trail.
The Scottish Maritime Museum occupies a listed Victorian engine shop and harbour buildings in the old town. The Harbourside area has been regenerated, and the beach at Irvine is one of the larger sandy beaches on the Ayrshire coast. Irvine railway station has services to Glasgow Central (about 40 minutes) and Ayr. The town is the administrative centre of North Ayrshire Council. The Magnum Leisure Centre, built as part of the new town development, was one of the largest leisure centres in Europe when it opened. Scots law governs adult companionship in Irvine.
