Great Yarmouth: Herring Port, Pleasure Beach, and the Norfolk Coast
Great Yarmouth was one of the wealthiest towns in medieval England, built on herring. The Rows, a network of over 140 narrow lanes running between the main streets, date from the medieval period and several survive. The town walls, among the best preserved in England, enclosed the old town on three sides. The fishing industry collapsed through the twentieth century. The offshore oil and gas sector provided some replacement from the 1960s onward, servicing the southern North Sea fields. The population is around 70,000 for the borough.
The seafront runs south from the town centre past the Pleasure Beach amusement park, the Britannia Pier, and the Wellington Pier. The Outer Harbour, completed in 2009, was built to service offshore wind farms and energy installations. Great Yarmouth is isolated by road: the A47 is the main route west to Norwich (twenty miles) and the A12 heads south to Lowestoft. For adult companionship, Great Yarmouth is covered by Norfolk Constabulary and governed by England and Wales criminal law.
