Newburn: Tyneside Village on the River Where the Battle of Newburn Ford Changed History

Newburn sits on the north bank of the River Tyne, about five miles west of Newcastle city centre. It is within the City of Newcastle upon Tyne, though it retains a distinct village character. The population of the Newburn area is around 10,000. The Battle of Newburn Ford in 1640, where a Scottish Covenanter army crossed the Tyne and routed a Royalist force, was a trigger event for the English Civil War. The battle site is marked but not developed. The Church of St Michael and All Angels, above the river, dates partly to the 12th century. Newburn was an industrial village in the 19th century, with coal mines, a steel works, and the Spencer's steelworks providing employment.

The heavy industry is gone. The steelworks site is now Newburn Riverside, a business and industrial park. The Tyne Riverside Country Park runs along the south side of the road, offering walking and cycling paths along the riverbank toward Wylam (birthplace of railway pioneer George Stephenson) and eastward to the Scotswood Bridge. The Keelman's Lodge pub by the river is popular with walkers. Newburn does not have its own railway station; the nearest is Blaydon across the river or Wylam to the west. Bus routes run into Newcastle centre in about 25 minutes. For those interested in adult companionship in the western Newcastle area, Newburn's position on the Tyne, with Newcastle city centre a short bus ride east, provides access to the wider Tyneside conurbation.
