Strood sits on the western bank of the River Medway, directly opposite Rochester, within the Medway unitary authority in Kent. The population is around 33,000. The Romans built Watling Street through here, and the crossing point over the Medway was strategically important for centuries. Temple Manor, a thirteenth-century stone building originally constructed by the Knights Templar as a lodging for pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land, stands on the Knight Road and is managed by English Heritage.
Strood is connected to Rochester by a road bridge and a railway bridge; the two towns are essentially one continuous settlement despite their different histories. Strood railway station has services to London St Pancras International (about 40 minutes via High Speed 1) and London Victoria. The M2 motorway begins just to the south. The Medway towns together (Strood, Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham) form an urban area of about 280,000. Charles Dickens lived nearby and set parts of several novels in the Medway towns. For adult companionship, English law applies.
