The Old Grammar School in the town centre, a timber-framed building from 1614 raised on wooden posts above the street, is one of the most photographed buildings in Leicestershire. The weekly market still trades on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The town was a Parliamentarian stronghold during the Civil War, and the Battle of Naseby in 1645, which effectively ended the Royalist cause, was fought about five miles to the south.

The canal basin on the Grand Union Canal arm is a pleasant area for walking. Market Harborough station is on the Midland Main Line, with fast trains to London St Pancras in about an hour and to Leicester in 15 minutes.
