Accrington: Hard Red Bricks and a Football Club That Refused to Die
Accrington is a mill town in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire, about five miles east of Blackburn. The population is around 36,000. The town is known for Accrington NORI bricks (iron spelt backwards), extremely dense engineering bricks used in the foundations of the Empire State Building and Blackpool Tower. The brickworks closed in 2008 but the product remains legendary in construction circles. The Haworth Art Gallery, housed in an Arts and Crafts mansion, holds the largest collection of Tiffany glass in Europe outside the United States.

The original club resigned from the Football League in 1962, and a reformed club worked its way back from local amateur football to League Two over several decades.
