Welwyn Garden City: Ebenezer Howard's Second Garden City and the Hertfordshire Commuter Belt
Welwyn Garden City was founded in 1920 as the second garden city, after Letchworth. Ebenezer Howard planned both. The town was designed with wide boulevards, green spaces, and separated industrial and residential zones. The Shredded Wheat factory, a landmark Art Deco building next to the railway, operated from 1926 until 2008. The population is around 48,000. The town forms part of the Welwyn Hatfield borough in Hertfordshire.
Welwyn Garden City station provides Great Northern services to London King's Cross (twenty-five minutes) and northward to Peterborough. The A1(M) runs along the eastern edge. The Howard Centre and the original town centre along Howardsgate carry the main retail. Hatfield, with the former de Havilland airfield and the University of Hertfordshire, is three miles south.
