Totton sits at the head of Southampton Water, on the western edge of the Southampton urban area, within the New Forest district. The population is around 28,000. Despite its proximity to Southampton (the city centre is about four miles east), Totton has a separate identity, partly because the River Test and the Redbridge Causeway form a natural boundary. The Eling Tide Mill, which stands at the causeway, is one of the very few remaining tide mills in working condition in the country. The mill is documented as early as the Domesday Book of 1086.
Totton is the largest town in the New Forest district and serves as a gateway to the National Park, which begins immediately to the west. The A36 and A326 pass through or near the town. Totton railway station has services to Southampton Central (about 10 minutes) and connections onward. Testwood Lakes, a nature reserve managed by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, lies on the southern edge. The town centre is largely mid-twentieth century, with the Totton and Eling Town Council offices on Library Road. For adult companionship, English criminal law applies.
