Eastleigh: Railway Works Town, the Pirelli Factory, and Hampshire's M3 Corridor
Eastleigh grew because of the railway. The London and South Western Railway moved its carriage works from Nine Elms to Eastleigh in 1891, and the locomotive works followed in 1910. At peak employment the works provided jobs for over 3,000 people. The works are much reduced but still operational. Southampton Airport sits within the Eastleigh borough boundary. The population is around 53,000 for the town, with the wider borough at 133,000. The Fleming Park leisure centre and the former Pirelli cable factory site (now redeveloped) are local landmarks.
The M3 runs along the eastern edge, and the M27 passes to the south. Eastleigh station is a junction on the main line between London Waterloo and Southampton/Bournemouth. Winchester is five miles north. For adult companionship, Eastleigh is covered by Hampshire Constabulary and falls under England and Wales criminal law.
