Aldershot was a village of fewer than 900 people before the army arrived in 1854. The military camp was established during the Crimean War, and the town grew entirely around it. Aldershot Garrison remains one of the largest military installations in the UK, housing several thousand troops. The population of the town is around 37,000, with the wider Rushmoor borough at approximately 95,000. Wellington Statue, the largest equestrian statue in Britain, overlooks the town from the military grounds.
Aldershot sits at the western end of the Blackwater Valley, on the Hampshire-Surrey border. The A331 Blackwater Valley Route connects to the M3 at junction 4a. Aldershot station provides South Western Railway services to London Waterloo in under an hour. Farnborough, the home of the biennial air show, is two miles east.
