Uxbridge: Hillingdon's Centre, RAF Heritage, and the Western Edge of the Tube
Uxbridge is the administrative centre of the London Borough of Hillingdon, at the western edge of the tube network where the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines terminate. Heathrow Airport is five miles south. The RAF base at Uxbridge, where Fighter Command's 11 Group was directed during the Battle of Britain, closed in 2010 and the site is being redeveloped for housing. The Battle of Britain Bunker, the underground operations room where the air war was coordinated, remains open as a museum. The population of the Uxbridge area is around 35,000, within a borough of approximately 305,000.
The Pavilions shopping centre and the High Street form the commercial core. Brunel University, on a campus at the eastern edge of town, contributes a student population of around 15,000.
