Feltham sits in the London Borough of Hounslow in west London, about 13 miles west of central London. The population is around 28,000. The town is inescapably connected to Heathrow Airport, which lies less than two miles to the northwest. Aircraft on approach to the northern runway pass directly over the town, and the airport has been the main source of local employment since it opened in 1946. Before Heathrow, Feltham was a small Middlesex village with market gardens and a railway junction. HM Young Offender Institution Feltham, on Bedfont Road, is one of the largest young offender institutions in England. The Feltham Marshalling Yards, once one of the biggest railway marshalling yards in southern England, have been redeveloped as the Feltham Arena retail and leisure park.
The High Street and the Centre, a covered shopping precinct, form the commercial core. Feltham station is on the Waterloo to Windsor and Reading lines, with trains to London Waterloo in about 30 minutes. The A316 connects to the M3, and the A30 Great South West Road runs to the south. Hounslow and Twickenham are neighbouring towns.
