The area has a distinctly village-like character in parts, particularly along Chiswick Mall and around St Nicholas Church, where the artist William Hogarth is buried. Hogarth's House, a seventeenth-century building where he lived from 1749 until his death in 1764, is now a small museum. Chiswick House, a Palladian villa built by Lord Burlington in the 1720s and set in 65 acres of historic gardens, is one of the finest examples of neo-Palladian architecture in England.
The Fuller's Griffin Brewery operated on the Thames at Chiswick from 1845 until brewing ceased in 2020, when production moved to a new facility. The site is being redeveloped. The Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge passes along the Chiswick stretch of the Thames, and the area has a strong rowing tradition with several clubs on the river. Turnham Green Terrace and Chiswick High Road provide a commercial centre with restaurants, shops, and a local cinema.
