Glasgow City: Scotland's Largest Metropolis and Its Many Faces
Glasgow is a city of 635,000 people — over a million in the greater urban area — and it carries its contradictions openly. The Merchant City quarter has been polished into a dining and cocktail district. The West End, around Byres Road and the university, runs on bookshops, independent cafes, and Ashton Lane's fairy-lit bars. Finnieston transformed from derelict waterfront to Scotland's most acclaimed restaurant strip in barely a decade. Charles Rennie Mackintosh's architectural legacy — the Glasgow School of Art (fire-damaged but being restored), the Willow Tea Rooms, the Lighthouse — gives the city a design identity that Edinburgh cannot match. The music scene has produced bands continuously since the 1980s: Orange Juice, Primal Scream, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, Chvrches. The Barrowland Ballroom remains one of Britain's best live music venues.
But Glasgow also holds some of the most deprived postcode areas in western Europe. Life expectancy in Calton and Bridgeton has historically been among the lowest in the UK. Shipbuilding on the Clyde, which once employed tens of thousands, is reduced to BAE Systems' naval work at Govan and Scotstoun. The NHS is the city's largest employer. Glasgow's humour is direct and often dark, its people famously warm with strangers, and its relationship with Edinburgh — 45 minutes east — remains one of mutual suspicion dressed up as banter. The 2014 Commonwealth Games accelerated regeneration in the east end, and the SEC campus (the Hydro arena) made Glasgow one of Europe's top five live entertainment cities by ticket sales.
