Felling is a district of Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne, directly opposite the eastern end of Newcastle upon Tyne. The population is around 10,000. The area was historically industrial, with coal mining, glassmaking, and chemical works. The Felling pit disaster of 1812, which killed 92 miners, led directly to the development of the safety lamp by Humphry Davy and, independently, by George Stephenson. The colliery is long gone, but the event marks a significant moment in mining safety history.
Felling is primarily residential, with post-war housing estates and some older Victorian terraces. The A184 and A185 run through the area, providing connections to Gateshead town centre (about a mile west) and the A1(M). Felling Metro station is on the Tyne and Wear Metro's green line, with services to Newcastle city centre in about ten minutes. The Gateshead Quayside area, with the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art and the Sage Gateshead, is a short distance to the west. Adult companionship in Felling is governed by English law.
