Wickford is a town in the Basildon district of Essex, about thirty miles east of central London. The population is around 30,000. The area has ancient roots; a major Anglo-Saxon cemetery was excavated nearby, and St Catherine's Church retains a twelfth-century nave. The modern town owes much of its character to the plotlands movement of the early twentieth century, when cheap parcels of agricultural land were sold to Londoners for weekend bungalows and smallholdings. Many of these plots were later formalised into the residential streets that exist today.
Wickford railway station provides direct services to London Liverpool Street (about 40 minutes) via Billericay and Shenfield. The town centre, redeveloped in the 1960s and 1970s, has a functional character. The River Crouch rises near Wickford and flows eastward to the estuary at Burnham-on-Crouch. The A127 and A130 roads provide connections to Southend-on-Sea and Chelmsford. The surrounding countryside is flat Essex arable land. For adult companionship, English law governs the position.
