Camulodunum. The capital of Iron Age Britain under Cunobelin, then the first major Roman colony in the province. Boudicca burned it to the ground in AD 60. The Romans rebuilt it with walls that still stand in sections, over 1,900 years later. Colchester Castle, built by the Normans on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, has the largest Norman keep in Europe, larger even than the Tower of London's White Tower. The town's claim to be Britain's oldest recorded town is supported by more archaeological evidence than most of its rivals can produce.
