Bridlington: Yorkshire Coast Resort with a Priory and a Working Harbour
Bridlington sits on the East Riding of Yorkshire coast, between the chalk headland of Flamborough Head to the north and the long sweep of Bridlington Bay to the south. The population is around 35,000. The town has been a seaside resort since the Victorian era, with a promenade, amusement arcades, and sandy beaches. The Old Town, set back from the seafront, is centred on the Priory Church, an Augustinian foundation dating to 1113. The Bayle Gate, a fourteenth-century gatehouse, serves as a local museum.
Bridlington Harbour is one of the few working harbours on the Yorkshire coast, with a small fishing fleet landing shellfish. The RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs, a few miles to the north, hosts one of the largest seabird colonies in England, including gannets, puffins, and guillemots. David Hockney, who grew up in Bradford, painted extensively around the East Yorkshire Wolds near Bridlington and maintained a studio in the town for several years. Rail services run to Hull (about 55 minutes) and Scarborough. Adult companionship is governed by English law.
