Exeter was Isca Dumnoniorum to the Romans, who built a fortress here around AD 55 at the lowest crossing point of the River Exe. Sections of the Roman wall survive, incorporated into the medieval city walls that still encircle much of the centre. The Cathedral, begun in 1133 and completed over two centuries, has the longest uninterrupted Gothic vaulted ceiling in the world: 96 metres of rib vaulting running the full length of the nave.
