Heanor is a small market town in the Amber Valley borough of Derbyshire, roughly equidistant between Nottingham and Derby at about 10 miles from each. The population is around 17,000. The town's economy was built on coal mining and hosiery manufacturing. D.H. Lawrence's father, Arthur Lawrence, worked at Brinsley Colliery nearby, and the landscape of the Erewash Valley features in Sons and Lovers and other works, though Lawrence himself was from Eastwood, a couple of miles to the east across the Nottinghamshire border. The Memorial Park off the Market Place commemorates those lost in both world wars.
The Market Place and High Street form the commercial centre. Heanor has no railway station; the nearest is Langley Mill, about two miles south, on the Nottingham to Sheffield line. The A608 and A610 provide road connections, and the M1 junction 26 is about five miles to the southeast.
