Glossop sits on the western edge of the Peak District in Derbyshire, at the foot of the Snake Pass and the Woodhead Pass. The population is around 33,000 (including the wider Glossopdale area). The town developed as a cotton manufacturing centre in the nineteenth century under the patronage of the Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk, who laid out the planned town centre of Howard Town with its grid of streets. The Norfolk Arms, named after the Duke, stands at the centre. The older settlement of Old Glossop lies to the east, closer to the moors.
The A57 Snake Pass, one of the most dramatic road routes in England, climbs eastward from Glossop to Sheffield across the bleak moorland of Bleaklow and Kinder Scout. The Pennine Way long-distance footpath begins at the Nags Head in Edale, about seven miles to the south-east. Glossop railway station is the terminus of a branch line from Manchester Piccadilly (about 40 minutes). The Partington Players, an amateur dramatic society, use the Partington Theatre. The town has a mountain-edge character quite different from the lowland cotton towns further west. English law governs adult companionship.
