Coventry: Cathedral City Rebuilt from Ruins
Coventry has been destroyed and rebuilt more thoroughly than any other English city. The medieval city — prosperous from wool and cloth — was levelled by the Luftwaffe on 14 November 1940, in a bombing raid so devastating that the Germans coined the verb "coventrieren" (to Coventrate) for total destruction. The ruins of St Michael's Cathedral were left standing as a memorial. Next to them, Basil Spence designed a new cathedral, consecrated in 1962, with a tapestry by Graham Sutherland, a baptistry window by John Piper, and a sculpture of St Michael defeating the Devil by Jacob Epstein. It is one of the most significant twentieth-century buildings in Britain.
The post-war city was rebuilt around the motor car — literally. Coventry was the centre of the British car industry: Jaguar, Rover, Triumph, Hillman, Humber, and Daimler all manufactured here. The ring road, built in the 1960s to keep traffic out of the pedestrianised centre, also effectively cut the centre off from the surrounding neighbourhoods. Lady Godiva, who rode naked through the streets to protest her husband's taxation of the poor (according to legend), is commemorated in a statue in Broadgate and in the city's coat of arms.
Coventry served as UK City of Culture in 2021, an event delayed by the pandemic but which still delivered significant investment in cultural infrastructure. The city has two universities (Coventry University and the University of Warwick, which despite its name sits largely within Coventry's boundary) and a population of around 345,000. The economy has diversified from automotive into advanced manufacturing, gaming, and logistics.
