Truro: Cornwall's Only City, With a Victorian Cathedral and a Tin Mining Past

Truro is the administrative capital and only city in Cornwall, situated at the confluence of the Allen and Kenwyn rivers, which form the Truro River flowing into the Fal estuary and Carrick Roads. The population is around 20,000. Truro Cathedral, completed in 1910 in Early English Gothic Revival style, was the first Anglican cathedral built on a new site in England since Salisbury in the 13th century. Its three spires are visible from across the city. The Royal Cornwall Museum on River Street, founded in 1818, holds collections of Cornish minerals, archaeology, and art. Lemon Street, a Georgian terrace climbing the hill from the centre, is one of the finest Georgian streets in the West Country.

The city has a good range of independent shops alongside chains, clustered around Boscawen Street, Lemon Quay, and the Pannier Market. Truro Farmers Market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays on Lemon Quay. The Hall for Cornwall on Back Quay is the county's main arts venue. Truro station is at the end of the branch from the main Cornish mainline at Truro, with services to London Paddington in about four and a half hours and Plymouth in about an hour. The A39 runs north toward Wadebridge and the A390 east toward St Austell.

Truro's river was navigable to the city until the 19th century, and the quays near Lemon Quay were once busy with tin and copper exports. Today, the river route to Falmouth is a popular boat trip.
