Colwyn Bay (Bae Colwyn in Welsh) sits on the North Wales coast between Llandudno and Rhyl, within the Conwy county borough. The population is around 30,000. The town developed as a Victorian seaside resort after the railway arrived in the 1840s. The promenade runs along the bay, with views across to the Great Orme headland at Llandudno. The pier, built in 1900, fell into disrepair and was largely demolished between 2018 and 2019 after being damaged by storms.
The Welsh Mountain Zoo, founded in 1963 on a hillside above the town, is the National Zoo of Wales. Eirias Park hosts rugby union (the former home ground of Rygbi Gogledd Cymru) and large outdoor concerts. The A55 expressway, which runs through the town in a cut-and-cover tunnel section, provides rapid access to the M56 and the English motorway network to the east, and to Bangor and Holyhead to the west. Colwyn Bay railway station is on the North Wales Coast Line. The town has undergone regeneration since the 2010s, with waterfront improvements. For adult companionship, England and Wales criminal law applies.
