Salford and Manchester share a boundary so blurred that most people crossing it do not notice. The Irwell runs between them, Manchester on one bank, Salford on the other, and the two cities have been functionally intertwined since the Industrial Revolution. But Salford has its own identity, its own council, and since 2011 its own defining landmark: MediaCityUK at Salford Quays.
The BBC moved five departments (Sport, Breakfast, 5 Live, Children's, and Learning) from London to MediaCityUK, joined by ITV Granada, dock10 studios, and the University of Salford's media campus. The Lowry theatre and gallery, named after L.S. Lowry who painted the industrial landscapes of this exact area, opened in 2000 on the site of the former Manchester Docks. The Imperial War Museum North, designed by Daniel Libeskind, sits across the water. What was derelict dockland in the 1980s is now one of the most recognisable media quarters in Britain.
