Leeds transformed itself more successfully than almost any other English city in the post-industrial period. The wool and engineering industries that built Victorian Leeds — the vast warehouses on The Calls, the ornate arcades in the city centre, the municipal confidence of the Town Hall designed by Cuthbert Brodrick — gave way to financial services, law, digital technology, and higher education. The city is now the largest centre for financial and legal services outside London, with firms occupying the regenerated warehouse district south of the river and the new office towers on Wellington Street.
The Victoria Quarter and its glass-roofed County Arcade house Harvey Nichols (the first outside London when it opened in 1996) and high-end retail. Kirkgate Market, a covered market of enormous scale, sits at the other end of the commercial spectrum — it was here that Michael Marks opened his Penny Bazaar in 1884, the origin of Marks and Spencer. Leeds United, at Elland Road, generates passions among its supporters that outsiders find either admirable or alarming depending on the result.
The city district extends well beyond the urban core. Headingley, north of the centre, is the student quarter and home to the cricket ground that has hosted Test matches since 1899. Otley, on the Wharfe, is a stone market town that feels distinctly North Yorkshire. Roundhay Park, one of the largest urban parks in Europe, sits to the northeast. The metropolitan district population is around 800,000, making it the third-largest local authority in England.
